Becoming the Person I want to be

Perhaps one of the most important aspects of success is becoming the person you need to be to achieve that success. What lots of people don’t realise is before you can go out and make a million dollars you actually have to invest time and effort into yourself and become a million-dollar version of yourself.

Power of Mindset

This post will mainly be focusing on mindset. How you can improve and develop your mindset. I think one of the most important steps is becoming aware of your thoughts and mindset. This is a very hard but simple task, as most people aren’t really paying attention to their thoughts. I started doing this just a couple of weeks ago and noticed some of the negative thoughts I had about myself. The main thing I noticed was while I was looking at applying for masterclass groups, I kept thinking to myself; why would they want you? what could you possibly bring? I noticed that with this mindset I was never going to be able to join a class. Just taking the extra time to listen to what your actually telling yourself can show so many of the limiting beliefs that are holding you back.

Expectations and Mindset

Another one of the key things I learnt after listening to and reading Jason Drees book (Do the Impossible: Unlock Your Full Potential with the Power of Mindset) is your mind set is your expectations. This makes a lot of sense when you think about it. If your expectation is that you cannot achieve something you will never be ready or trying to achieve that task and therefore never achieve it. This is very important because if your expectation is that you can only get a deal that makes 10k a year, you will never get a deal bigger than that. Expectations can limit your own potential. Once you start focusing on your mindset you can start to see all the thoughts, perceptions, expectations and beliefs you have that may be limiting your potential and growth. For example, even though I had in my vivid vision that I was going to earn 100k passively a year, I had a contradictory belief that it was not possible for me to increase my passive income by more than 10k a year. Clearly with this belief in place I would never be able to achieve my vision within the 3 year timeframe.

Limiting Beliefs

To improve your mindset, you must remove these limiting beliefs. Normally these are done by first identifying the belief and then slowly working towards the underlying reason you have that belief then proving it wrong to remove the belief. However, one of the issues with this is that you must first find the belief, this may not always be quick and may take weeks to identify. What Jason Drees teaches is a process he calls shifting frames. I used this last night while reading his book and had great success within an hour of reading I had identified multiple limiting beliefs and was able to instantly remove these. Once you identify the beliefs it is very easy to see where and when they limit you and change these thoughts. I found these frame setting exercises very helpful for not only finding these limiting beliefs but quickly bringing my mindset into a place where I can push forward with my goals. I am still very far off mastering the frame setting exercises but so far have had great success with at least identifying my limiting beliefs.

Power of Alignment

Alignment is probably one of the most important aspects of achieving your goals. I like to think of having alignment as your mindset matching your goals. When you look into this a bit more you can start to understand why this is so important. Let’s look at some common goals to demonstrate this. For example, reaching a goal body fat percentage or even just loosing weight. When most people set this goal, they are able to make some progress for a couple of weeks or months, however after this it starts to become difficult, and they quickly break into their old habits. This is because although they want to lose weight they may not actually want to stop eating unhealthy food. This means their goals and their mindset are not aligned. Jason Drees speaks about it in his book and his theory suggests that alignment creates the connection between your mindset, action and goals. The reason why this is so important is because your mindset dictates the action you take, and the actions therefore dictate whether you achieve your goals or not. If your mindset is not aligned with your action and goals, then you will never achieve them. You can only operate outside of your mindset for a brief time, after this you will slowly loose motivation and find it more difficult to keep taking action. I had this exact same issue before. I would eat very well for 2-3 weeks and then I would snap, I’d have one bar of chocolate and then it was over I would go on a frenzy and eat as many as I could and be right back into the same position I started.

Getting into Alignment

What helped me get into an aligned mindset was changing my thoughts around my goals. Most goal starts with an I want, for me it started with I want to lose weight. That’s normally where it stopped however, this time I have found by changing it to a I will lose weight I have managed to increase my motivation and alignment dramatically. I think the biggest reason this has worked is because you can want a lot of things and none of these things have to be real. However, when you change something to an I will you’re not only putting yourself into the right mindset, but you are also saying that you are becoming that person. I truly believe that I will be the person who has reached my weight goals in 6 months. Finally, I’ll just touch on saying “NO” being able to say no is one of the most important things when reaching your goals. Being able to say no to opportunities that aren’t what you want or will take you away from your goals. Saying no will often decide on whether you achieve your goals or not.

What you can do now

If you would like to improve your mindset I recommend following these steps. One become more conscious of your beliefs and thoughts. Two try and remove limiting beliefs. Finally get out there and practice these things, your mindset is the same as any other muscle you use in your body; to get stronger and better you need to train it. I would also recommend getting help from reading a book or using other mindset coaching tools, I am so far only about halfway through Jason Drees book and have found it a huge help, but you should go out and find something that works for you. Not everything will be a fit for everyone so go out and try some tools and see which ones suit you. I will leave a link for the book down below so if you are interested you can check it out. In the next blog I think I will be talking about setting goals and self-development.
